Turmeric, also known as yellow ginger or turmeric, belongs to the ginger family and originally comes from South Asia. It reaches heights of up to one meter and produces magically beautiful flowers. However, only the root, also known as the rhizome, is used. Turmeric has been known and revered as sacred in India for at least 5,000 years and is used as a medicinal plant due to its essential oils. The ground powder was used for poultices, and in curry it is said to help with digestive problems. It was not until the Middle Ages that the plant found its way to Europe. In India, 80% of the annual production is consumed.

Turmeric is an important component of curry and gives it both the spicy taste and the typical yellow color. Turmeric is also the main ingredient for the taste and color in many recipes for “golden milk”.
