description
Marjoram - also known as sausage herb or roast herb - is an important spice plant that originates from Asia Minor.
Marjoram is a popular spice that is used in many cuisines, especially in Mediterranean and European cuisine. The taste of marjoram is mild, aromatic and somewhat sweet, making it an ideal ingredient for a wide variety of dishes. In German, Hungarian and Italian cuisine in particular, marjoram is used regularly, whether in stews, soups, meat dishes or even in savory baked goods.
Marjoram is an annual semi-shrub from the labiate family with a very spicy flavor. It grows to a height of up to 80 cm. The hairy leaves are pointed at the ends and are very soft to the touch.
It is often confused with oregano from the same family. However, oregano is perennial and has a much stronger flavor.
Like many herbs, marjoram was used in ancient times as a seasoning, but also as a remedy for digestive disorders and respiratory diseases and was considered the “herb of joy”, as it was used to treat stress and insomnia.
In today's cuisine, marjoram is used in particular in the preparation of meat dishes such as roasts, sausages or goulash. However, it also goes perfectly with tomato or potato soups, in marinades for grilled food or in fillings for pies. Marjoram also has its place in vegetarian cuisine - for example in lentil dishes, ratatouille or in vegetable stir-fries.
Marjoram is a wonderful spice that gives dishes a mild yet intense flavor without overpowering the other flavors. Especially in combination with other Mediterranean herbs such as thyme, oregano or rosemary, marjoram unfolds its full potential.
Cooking tip: Oregano should never be missing on a pizza! But it should also be used in other Italian dishes such as tomato sauces or meat and fish dishes.
