An intense, warm-spicy aroma with a sweet and slightly bitter note – cloves are one of the oldest and most powerful spices in the world.

Ground Cloves – aromatic, strong, and 100% pure

Our ground cloves are carefully dried and ground to preserve their full flavour and valuable essential oils. As with all our spices, we pay attention to high quality - for pure, unadulterated flavour.
Discover the unique seasoning power of ground cloves - intense, spicy and with a characteristically sweet and tangy fragrance.

What makes our ground cloves special

Our cloves are gently processed to retain their high content of essential oils – up to 15%. These oils, especially eugenol, are responsible for the distinctive aroma and powerful flavor. Just a small pinch is enough to give dishes a deep, warm note.

The quality of the cloves is evident in their aroma: sweet-spicy with a fine sharpness. Grinding intensifies these aromas even more. Our ground cloves are ideal for anyone who values uncompromising quality when cooking or baking.

What do ground cloves taste like?

Ground cloves release an intense, penetrating aroma that is warm, slightly pungent, and sweet at the same time. The flavor is reminiscent of a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper, with the sweet-balsamic note taking center stage, accompanied by a slightly numbing sharpness.

This complex flavor profile gives dishes depth and character – whether in sweet holiday baked goods or in savory dishes of Middle Eastern and North African cuisine. The spice pairs especially well with cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg – a true all-rounder for creative cooking.

Uses for ground cloves

Clove powder is an essential spice for winter cooking, but it goes far beyond classic holiday baking. It’s perfect for seasoning marinades, sauces, chutneys, and meat dishes – especially game, lamb, duck, or pork benefit from its deep warmth.

In vegetarian dishes, ground cloves add exciting accents – try it in pumpkin dishes, red cabbage salad, or lentil stews. For lovers of Middle Eastern cuisine, it’s a must-have in spice blends like Ras el-Hanout or Garam Masala.

Lamb ragout with ground cloves

Enhance a slow-cooked lamb ragout with almonds, cinnamon, dried apricots, and a pinch of ground cloves. The combination of fruity sweetness and spice brings out the full depth of the meat.

Beetroot soup with cloves

A touch of ground clove adds surprising depth to a creamy beetroot soup. Perfect with a hint of orange zest and some fresh ginger.

Wild boar stew with sour cherries

A seasonal dish that shines through the harmony of fruity acidity and warming spice. Ground cloves round off the sauce and enhance the cherry flavors.

Our tip:

Try a pork roast slow-cooked at low temperature (120 °C / 250 °F) for two hours, topped with apple slices, a little cinnamon, and a pinch of ground clove – a true feast for the senses. Best prepared in a cast iron Dutch oven, where the flavors can fully develop.

Botany and origin of the clove

The clove is the dried flower bud of the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum), an evergreen tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). Originally from the Indonesian Moluccas – the famous "Spice Islands" – it is now primarily cultivated in Madagascar, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.

The clove tree can grow up to 10 meters tall. Its aromatic flower buds are harvested while still closed and showing a pinkish hue. After harvesting, they are sun-dried until they turn dark brown and develop their characteristic intense aroma.

Cloves have been valued in India and China since ancient times for both medicinal and culinary uses. They reached Europe in the Middle Ages via Arab and Dutch traders. Due to their intense properties and long shelf life, they were once considered highly valuable – even traded for gold.

Cloves contain a high proportion of essential oils, particularly eugenol, which is responsible for their typical scent and slightly numbing effect. In addition to culinary uses, cloves are also appreciated in natural medicine – known for their disinfecting, pain-relieving, and digestive benefits.

In summary: Ground cloves are not only a time-honored spice with an impressive history but also a versatile flavor enhancer for both kitchen and wellness – powerful, distinctive, and unforgettable in taste.
