Peppers themselves belong to the nightshade family and originally come from Central and South America. It was already being cultivated there around 5,000 BC. Today, around 25 types of bell pepper are known worldwide - but only five of these have been deliberately domesticated by humans. The rest are original wild forms that still impress today with their natural diversity.
After the discovery of America, it reached Europe via Spain - and from there began its worldwide triumphal march.

Hungary and paprika - a real love story

Hungary in particular has a deep culinary and cultural connection to paprika. Initially, the plant was considered an ornamental in monastery gardens until it found its place in Hungarian cuisine in the 18th century thanks to clever breeding. Farmers began to grow paprika in fields around Szeged and Kalocsa - today two of the country's best-known paprika regions.

In the 19th century, paprika became Hungary's national spice - and is still inextricably linked with traditional cuisine today. Hungarian goulash is probably the most famous dish. Every part of the country, even every family, has its own recipe - often with secret ingredients and always with sweet paprika at its heart.
